Navy battleship USS Maine, with
266 men, in Havana Harbor of the Spanish colony of Cuba on 15 February 1898.
Following
the sinking of the US Navy ship USS Maine in Cuba's Havana Harbor in February 1898, the US declared war on Spain
in April 1898.
The US destroyed
the Spanish fleet in the Philippines in May 1898. The Spanish surrendered in August.
The US took
the island of Guam from Spain in June 1898 and placed it under the control of the US Navy.
The US annexed
the Hawaiian Islands, an independent republic, in June 1898 and claimed uninhabited
Wake Island in July 1898.
In the Caribbean
Sea, the US defeated the Spanish on the islands of Cuba by July 1898 and Puerto Rico by August 1898.
In Central
America in 1903, the US, interested in building a canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific, backed separatists in the Columbian
province of Panama, recognised the Panamanian declaration of Independence from Columbia, and made Panama a US protectorate.
Cuba
Map of Cuba
Inhabited
by Taino Indians (Arawak), who inhabited most of the Caribbean, the island of Cuba was claimed for Spain by Chrisopher Columbus
in 1492. The origin of the name Cuba may be Taino or Portuguese.
Spain colonised the
island. Spanish colonists fished; grew sugar cane, tobacco and citrus; and raised cattle. Spanish missionairies introduced
the natives to Catholicism. Spain brought
many slaves from Africa. In the 1800s many Chinese, Indian (from South Asia) and Malay laborers were brought in from
Asia.
In the 1800s Spanish colonists
rebelled against Spanish rule. Jose Marti is the best known of the Cubans who fought for independence from Spain. Marti was
killed in fighting Spanish soldiers in 1895.
The U. S. sent a battleship, the U.
S. S. Maine, to Cuba to protect American interests in 1898. While docked in Havana,
the ship exploded, killing 266 of the crew. Some Americans accused the Spanish of sabotage.

In the Treaty of Paris of 1898, the Spanish gave up Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean
Sea and the Philippines and Guam in the Pacific Ocean to the U. S.
American troops occupied Cuba for three years, until 1902, when
the U. S. granted Cuba independence.
The U. S. kept a small piece of Cuba in Guantanamo Bay for an
American naval base by a lease without a date of expiration.
A Cuban president was democratically elected in 1902.
The US occupied Cuba again to protect American interests during
rebellions from 1906 to 1909.
Puerto Rico remains a US territory. Puerto Ricans have been US
citizens since 1917.
Hawaii was a US territory until it became the 50th state in 1959.
Midway
Atoll, geographically one of the Hawaiian Islands, remains a US territory. Home to many birds, it is a national
wildlife refuge.
The Philippines
were a US protectorate until granted independence in 1946.
Guam remains a US territory. Guamanians
are US citizens.
Wake
Island remains a US territory and is used by the US Air Force for missile testing. The atoll is claimed also by the Republic
of Marshall Islands.
Map indicates
the results of the Spanish-American War in 1898. The US took Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea and Guam and the Philippines

1898
The Hawaiian
Islands on a world map.
The
eight main Hawaiian islands (Southeastern Hawaiian Islands). From east to west (right to left): Hawai'i, the biggest island,
known as "The Big Island"; Kaho'olawe; Maui, Lana'i; Moloka'i; O'ahu; Kaua'i; and Ni'ihau.
The British explorer Captain James Cook called the Hawaiian Islands the
Sandwich Islands, for his patron, the Earl of Sandwich, in 1778.
The Islands were known as the Sandwich Islands until the early to mid-1800s.
The King of the island of Hawaii, Kamehameha, was the king of most of the Hawaiian Islands -
Hawaii, Maui, Molokai and Oahu - by 1895 and all the islands by 1810.
Kingdom of Hawaii
Hawaii was recognised as an independent kingdom by the U. S. in 1846 and subsequently established
relations and agreed treaties with Denmark
(1846), Hamburg (1848), Bremen (1851), Great
Britain (1851), Sweden and Norway (1852), Tahitian Postal Convention (1853), France
(1857), Belgium (1862), the Netherlands and Luxembourg (1862),
Italy (1863), Spain (1863), the Swiss Confederation
(1864), Russia (1869), Japan (1871), New South Wales (1874), Austria-Hungary (1875), Germany
(1879, Portugal
(1882), Japan (1886), Samoa
(1887) etc.
David Kalākaua (1836 - 1891), last king of the Hawaiian Islands (1874
- 1891).
Queen Queen Liliʻuokalani Kapiʻolani, last monarch of the Hawaiian Islands (1891 - 1893), sister
of David Kalakaua.
Monarchy Overthrown
Favoring American annexation of Hawaii, resident American businessmen
overthrew the monarchy in 1893 and formed a provisional government.
Provisional Government
Sanford Dole, President of the Provisional Government
The Citizens Guard, the Honolulu Rifles - 1,500 armed white businessmen patrolled the city.
162 U. S. Marines from the USS Boston in Pearl Harbor occupied the royal palace.
The American president, Benjamin Harrison, favored annexation.
The new American president, Grover Cleveland, withdrew the proposed treaty to annex Hawaii, relieved the
captain of the USS Boston and replaced the U. S. Minister to Hawaii.
Republic of Hawaii
The provisional giovernment of Hawaii proclaimed the Republic of
Hawaii in 1894. Sanford Dole was its president.
A new American president, William McKinley, favored annexation and submitted
a treaty to Congress but it failed in the U. S. Senate in 1898.
The government of the Republic of Hawaii declared its neutrality in the
Spanish-American War.
Transfer of Sovereignty to the U. S.
The U. S. Congress passed a domestic resolution which was used (without
a real legal basis) to transfer Hawaiian sovereignty to the U. S. in 1898.
Annexation
The U. S. Congress voted to annex the Hawaiian Islands as a territory in
1898.
U. S. Territory of Hawaii
In 1900, Hawaii was a self-governing U. S. Territory with its own elected government. Sanford Dole was
appointed its first governor by U. S. President McKinley.
